Falconets lost to Germany 3-1 in a match that was staged at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo yesterday in the on-going FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
As it was the case, the Falconets had several opportunities to equalise against the three time champions.
As reported previously by Sportsbuddy, the Falconets of Nigeria kicked off their FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup campaign with tenacity and emerged 1-0 winners against South Korea in the early hours of Monday morning.
Germany Strike First, Falconets Fight Back
The first goal was scored in the 17th minute when a cross returned by Cora Zicai to Alara Sehitler led to a header that scored for Germany.
Chiamaka Okwuchukwu of Nigeria had opportunities to level but was brilliantly stopped by German shotstopper Rebecca Adamczyk.
Germany take a stranglehold in the last period and thus decide the match.
Okwuchukwu replied for Nigeria in the 50th minute after capitalising on a defensive mistake, but Germany quickly restored their lead through Sofie Lena Zdebel, who put the ball in the back of the net in the 61st minute of the match, while Sarah Ernst sealed the match with the final goal in the stoppage time.
Nigeria now needs to respond against Venezuela in what will be the final match to determine their stay in the tournament.
