Renowned football ‘whip boys’ San Marino have finally recorded their first victory since 2004, ending a 140-game winless run.
This is only the second time in the history of the nation’s football existence a win is being achieved, and it was done against the same opponent, Liechtenstein.
The Sammarinese defeated Liechtenstein 1-0 in the Nations League—the same result as 20 years ago in a friendly—sending fans wild on social media.
19-year-old teenager Nicko Sensoli was the hero of the day, as his 53rd-minute goal was enough to earn San Marino their first ever win in a competitive fixture.
Football fans react to San Marino’s historic win

In ecstasy of the historic achievement, the “San Marino fan account on X” changed its profile to start “IT HAPPENED,” which was followed by a joyous separate posts of “Changed bio” and “Top of the league,” as the nation tops Gibraltar and Liechtenstein after the League D Group 1 opener.
One commented, “They wrote history. They will be remembered forever as legends, as the golden generation of Sammarinese football.”
A second replied, “San Marino won. That’s the tweet” while a third asked,”Am I dreaming?”
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo, in a different Nations League game, reached an incredible milestone following his goal against Croatia on Thursday evening.
