Super Eagles captain Williams Troost Ekong has thrown his full weight behind Austin Eguavoen, the interim head coach of the Nigeria national team, to lead the team to the AFCON 2025 tournament in Morocco.
Having previously been in charge of the Super Eagles on two occasions, Eguavoen was appointed by the Nigerian Football Federation a couple of weeks ago as an interim coach till the federation finds a permanent candidate.

The 59-year steered the Super Eagles to victory in his first test as Nigeria recorded a convincing 3-0 against Benin Republic in the AFCON qualifiers at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Following the victory, Troost Ekong expressed satisfaction, stating that the team believes in their coach and aims to achieve even more success under Eguavoen’s leadership, going beyond the qualifiers and into the 2025 AFCON competition.
What Troost Ekond said

Troost Ekong said, in a video shared by Poojamedia on X:
“We respect Benin, the last time we played against them, they won the game. But like I said, we have great belief in our team and in our coach, who is like a family member who has come back to us.
“I think that with the attacking talent we have, if we play very well, we try our best to keep the door shut at the back, we will create chances and score.
“I think today was a good indication of the direction we are heading. It is the first step of many that we will take to get to AFCON.”
Nigeria will now place attention on their second AFCON qualifying game against Rwanda, which will take place in few days, hoping to carry on with this impressive performance.
