Former Super Eagles star John Obi Mikel has praised Atalanta star Ademola Lookman for his decision to represent Nigeria at an early stage in his career.
The former Chelsea midfielder contrasted Lookman’s choice with other players of dual nationality who often wait until later in their careers to play for African nations, having touched the topic some months back.
Ahead of Atalanta’s UEFA Champions League opener against Arsenal, Mikel reiterated his belief that players should make a firm commitment to a country and not view African nations as second options.
Mikel hails Ademola Lookman for choosing Nigeria
Focusing on Ademola Lookman, who pledged allegiance to Nigeria in 2022 after featuring for the England youth team, Mikel was fullsome in his appreciation for the 26-year-old.
“I think Lookman made the right decision to switch quickly and say, ‘I’m going to represent my African country; I’m going to play for Nigeria’.
“He’s having an amazing season; played really well in the last Africa Cup of Nations. What a fantastic player he has been. Fair play to him.”
Lookman’s international career
Ademola Lookman previously represented England at the youth level, playing 31 matches for the U19, U20, and U21 teams. However, in 2022, he made a significant decision to switch his international allegiance to Nigeria.
Since joining the Super Eagles, Lookman has quickly established himself as a key player, making 25 appearances and scoring eight goals, per Transfer Markt.
His impressive performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he contributed three goals and an assist, solidified his status as one of Nigeria’s top talents.
Ademola Lookman’s impressive performances for both the Super Eagles and Atalanta earned him a nomination for the prestigious 2024 Ballon d’Or award.
