There’s been a lot of talk surrounding the Super Eagles’ coaching situation recently, especially with the recent performances of the national team.
While some feel it’s time to bring in fresh foreign talent, others are urging a different direction, a choice that might surprise a few. One voice that’s starting to gain traction in this debate is none other than former Super Eagles forward, Anthony Ujah. His perspective on the matter could reshape how fans think about the future of the team.
Interestingly, Ujah isn’t calling for some foreign technical managers to take the reins. Instead, he’s standing firmly behind a name that many Nigerians know well—Augustine Eguavoen.
The former Super Eagles player is currently leading the team in an interim role, overseeing crucial matches in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. And while some may question whether he’s the man for the long-term job, Ujah has no doubts about Augustine Eguavoen capability.
Recall that John Obi Mikel had praised the Super Eagles’ caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen, comparing him to Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti in handling people.
Anthony Ujah’s Words about Augustine Eguavoen

Despite whispers from the Nigeria Football Federation about possibly hiring a foreign technical adviser, Ujah believes Augustine Eguavoen should be the permanent head coach. To Ujah, there’s something about Eguavoen’s leadership, familiarity with the team, and understanding of Nigerian football that makes him the ideal choice to lead the Super Eagles moving forward.
“The team is in a transitional phase, moving from coach José Peseiro to finding a new coach,” Ujah told Brila FM.
“Eguavoen as the interim manager is one thing I’m really happy about.
“I don’t know how long he’ll be there, but he’s a good man, and the players respect him.”
