Super Eagles interim head coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has shared his thoughts on the team’s narrow 1-0 victory over Libya in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on Friday.
The game, which took place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, saw substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru net the only goal in the dying minutes to secure all three points for Nigeria.

Augustine Eguavoen Expected More Goals
Reacting to the match, Eguavoen expressed his satisfaction with the win but admitted he had expected the Super Eagles to score more goals.
According to him, the team created plenty of chances but struggled to break down a defensively-minded Libyan side, who spent much of the game sitting deep and soaking up pressure.
Eguavoen praised the effort and determination of the players, especially Dele-Bashiru for delivering the winning goal, but emphasized that the team needs to be more clinical in front of goal.
He noted that while the result was positive, the Super Eagles must improve their finishing if they are to succeed in the upcoming matches.
Despite the missed opportunities, Augustine Eguavoen remains confident that the team will build on the victory as they continue their AFCON qualifying campaign.
“I expected us to score more goals. Overall, we are happy to maintain our top spot. I was feeling bad, but we kept pushing and progressing. Emotions were high. Libya defended in numbers and we are happy to win.
“We were a bit slow in the first half, but the second half was good; we were faster and we got the goal,” Eguavoen told reporters.
