It’s not the return Boniface would have wanted as he saw his penalty saved by Kevin Trapp in the ninth minute of Bayern Leverkusen’s Bundesliga meeting with Frankfurt on Saturday afternoon.
The striker was part of the Super Eagles squad that got detained for hours threatening a day at the Al Abraq Airport in Libya, when Nigeria traveled for the reverse fixture of their AFCON qualifiers during the international break.
Boniface was on a massive run with Leverkusen before the break, scoring five goals and one assist in six games before the international break earlier in the month.

Nigerians react to Victor Boniface misses penalty
The host were awarded a penalty in the fifth minute after Eric Ebimbe was penalized for a foul on Amine Adli. The decision was confirmed after VAR consultation and Boniface stepped up to take in the ninth minute, only to see his effort saved by Kevin Trapp in the visitors’ goal.
Five minutes later, Frankfurt were awarded their own penalty and Omar Marmoush converted, before Robert Andrich made up for his penalty conceded by restoring parity in the 25th minute as it finished 1-1 at the interval.
