A solid 2-0 win over Venezia began Atalanta’s run of seven matches in 22 days, the first of two promising home fixtures.

Mario Pasalic was not slow to open his side’s account, scoring in the seventh minute after a goalmouth scramble. Atalanta’s early strike set the tone for a dominant showing throughout the match.

Ademola Lookman Early Substitution

In the 27th minute, Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman came close to adding a second, firing a powerful shot from outside the box that struck the post.

Venezia were then doubled up early in the second half as Mateo Retegui finished with a brilliant chip over the advancing goalkeeper. Lookman, who was celebrating his 27th birthday, was substituted at halftime for Juan Cuadrado.

Gasperini explained the decision. “Even though he is our most dangerous player, he struggled a lot to come back. He wasn’t able to play for the team but for the ideas, which are important. At that moment, Venezia had grown.” said the Italian via Calcionapoli1926.

Having contributed to 27 goals in the previous season—a performance that earned him a spot on the Ballon d’Or 30-man shortlist, also making him the clear favourite for the CAF Player of the Year Award.

Despite Lookman being Atlanta’s top offensive threat, Gasperini preferred to replace him in favor of the team’s defensive unity.

This season, Lookman has made full starts on just three occasions, including against Real Madrid, Fiorentina, and Bologna.

Lookman was also among 22 Nigerian players stranded in Libya before he returned to Abuja with the help of the Nigerian government.
