Victor Boniface marks his return with a goal but Bayer Leverkusen would have needed more as they were held in a 2-2 draw at Werder Bremen.
Xabi Alonso’s side makes it back-to-back draw in a frustrating evening in Bremen as a 90th-minute equalizer from Romano Schmid denied them all three points in the Bundesliga fixture.
The champions extended their unbeaten run in the fixture to nine but unfortunately, a run of three straight wins comes to an end, leaving them with more ground to cover in their quest to defend the title they won for the first time last season.

Victor Boniface goal not enough as Bayer Leverkusen is denied in Bremen
Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface opened the scoring on the half-hour mark, marking his return to the team after missing the mid-week trip to France due to an accident last Saturday.
Marvin Ducksh restored parity in the 74th minute but the visitors weren’t level for long as an own goal from German defender Felix Agu restored their one-goal cushion three minutes later.
However, Leverkusen would be denied a celebrant finish to the game as Romano Schmid salvage a point for the host in the final minute of normal time.
The result did see Leverkusen move up to third on the log, ahead of Freiburg who lost to new league leaders RB Leipzig, although Leverkusen may yet drop back to fourth, if the Sunday meeting between Union Berlin and Frankfurt poduce a winner.
Meanwhile the champions continues to lose ground in the race for the title. Boniface has however scored six and assisted one in eight Bundesliga games this season.
