Last night, Chelsea fans were not happy with Lewis Hall after Newcastle United’s 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge in the EFL Cup.

Hall played a big part in both goals for his team. His assist set up Alexander Isak’s opener, and his free kick from quick was the one that led to an own goal from Chelsea’s Axel Disasi.

Hall, who had posted on Instagram following the game with the caption ‘enjoyed that one’ and a winking emoji, and later changed that to a grinning emoji—but by then Chelsea fans had taken offence.

But Hall’s history with Chelsea’s academy did not stop fans from feeling that he had shown disrespect to his former club.

As a few supporters voiced their frustration in the comments, one person wrote, “You just spat in every one of [our] faces with that caption, Lewis.” Another added “a shameful academy graduate.”

Others called for Hall to show more respect, noting that Chelsea fans had continued to back him even after his departure.

Chelsea’s Hall came up through the club’s ranks and made 12 first team appearances before going on loan to Newcastle before the deal was made permanent this summer for £28m.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has spoken of the excitement the club has with Hall’s potential, saying earlier this year: ‘When we looked at the deal last year, we saw an opportunity to sign a young player who would continue to grow and develop.’
