As Friday, November 8, 2024, marks the 11th anniversary of Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets’ victorious 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup campaign, a longstanding promise remains unfulfilled.
After the team, under Coach Manu Garba, clinched a memorable 3-0 victory over Mexico in the final, then-Governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke, pledged to award houses to 21 players and ten team officials.
However, the commitment made during a celebratory reception at the Government House in Calabar has yet to be realized.
Captain Musa Muhammed Appeals to Current Administration
Former Golden Eaglets captain Musa Muhammed has been vocal about the unfulfilled promise, urging Cross River’s current Governor, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, to honor the commitment made by his predecessor.
In a report from allafrica, Muhammed stated, “They should help us plead with the Governor of Cross River State, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, to help us fulfil the promise made by the previous administration in 2013.
We hope and pray that the current Governor can help us and fulfil the promise made by the administration of former Governor Liyel Imoke.”

Remaining Hopeful for Government Support
Muhammed shared his continued optimism that the present administration will address their concerns.
“We are hopeful the present Governor Prince Bassey Edet Otu is going to help do that.
The state government promised all the players and officials houses in Calabar, but up till now, we have not heard anything from them.
We have tried everything possible to reach out to the state government so they know our plights,” he said.
As the anniversary approaches, the Golden Eaglets remain hopeful that their efforts on the pitch will be recognized and rewarded.
