Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong was celebrated at the African Nations Football Awards (ANFA) in Cairo, Egypt, where he received the Special Award for AFCON Performance 2024.
The Al Kholood defender’s leadership and outstanding defensive performance helped Nigeria secure a second-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, including three goals and four clean sheets.
Troost-Ekong was named Player of the Tournament, marking him as the first defender in over 20 years to earn the title, and was included in the Team of the Tournament.

Record-Breaking Defender
Troost-Ekong’s five-goal haul made him the highest-scoring defender in AFCON history, a feat that etched his name into the record books.
Following his award win, Troost-Ekong shared his gratitude on social media, acknowledging Egyptian star Omar Tarek, who accepted the award on his behalf.
Contending for CAF African Footballer of the Year
Troost-Ekong’s stellar season might yield even more accolades, as he is nominated for the prestigious CAF African Footballer of the Year award.
He will compete against fellow Nigerian star Ademola Lookman, currently at Atalanta, and other top African players for the coveted title.
