AFCON 2025 Hopes Hang by a Thread: Gernot Rohr Banks on Super Eagles for Benin’s Survival

Gernot Rohr

Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr, has expressed hope that Nigeria’s Super Eagles will aid his team’s bid to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Squirrels faced off against the Super Eagles on Thursday in Abidjan, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw.

Benin took the lead early in the 16th minute through Mohamed Tijani, but Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen equalized late in the game to deny Rohr’s side a vital win.

The draw means Benin Republic must now secure a result in their final qualifying match against Libya in Benghazi.

A victory or a narrow defeat could suffice for their qualification, but this hinges on Nigeria defeating Rwanda in Uyo on Monday.

Gernot Rohr Hopes For Super Eagles Favour

Speaking after the game, Gernot Rohr shared his strategy and hopes for the crucial final fixture.

“We have to avoid defeat. But you don’t go to play for a draw,” Rohr stated.

“So we will use our confidence from the performance today against Nigeria for the game in Benghazi.”

Rohr also made an appeal to his former team, expressing optimism that the Super Eagles will deliver in their final group game.

“Hopefully, the Super Eagles will beat Rwanda in Uyo,” he added, underlining how crucial Nigeria’s performance is to Benin’s AFCON aspirations.
