A Chance for Redemption
Okoye, now 25 and Udinese’s first-choice goalkeeper since last season, the shot stopper has had a rocky career with the Super Eagles.
Since the error that forced the Super Eagles out of the AFCON quarterfinals in 2021, Stanley Nwabali has taken the number one jersey. But with Nwabali not available for this game, Okoye is keen to repay his faith.
Speaking about his excitement, Okoye said in an interview with Victor Mobo: “This is why I’ve come, and I’ve waited for this moment.” I’m grateful and excited to put on the jersey again and play in front of Nigerian fans at home. We want to win the AFCON now, and I’m sure we can win it now.”
Nigeria Eyes a Strong Finish
Tonight’s clash against Rwanda, scheduled for a 5:00 PM kickoff at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, is the crucial test for Okoye.
Nigeria booked their semi-final place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, but coach Gernot Rohr will be looking to round off the qualifying with a flourish and strengthen their status as tournament favourites.
