The Anambra Police Command has confirmed that a shooting incident in Nnewi on Wednesday was not connected to any attempts to disrupt the burial of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, the owner of Ifeanyi Ubah Football Club.
Misunderstanding Between Security Agencies
According to Superintendent of Police Tochukwu Ikenga, the shooting occurred at Izuchukwu Junction on the Nnobi/Nnewi road around 7 p.m.
The police clarified that the incident involved a case of mistaken identity. Another security agency misidentified police operatives as hostile forces and opened fire on them.
Ikenga emphasized that the attack was not carried out by non-state actors or aimed at causing disruption during Ubah’s burial.

Investigation and Casualties
As revealed by The Nation, Ikenga revealed that the security operatives, while investigating a suspect, had trailed the individual to a checkpoint, leading to the exchange of gunfire.
Unfortunately, bullets struck the fuel tank of a Toyota Venza Sedan transporting the officers, causing the vehicle to be engulfed in flames.
Two innocent bystanders were injured and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital. The police have called for calm as investigations into the incident continue.
Joint security forces have been deployed to maintain peace during the burial ceremonies of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
Ubah, who passed away in London in July at the age of 52, will be laid to rest in his hometown of Otolo, Nnewi, on November 22, 2024
