In 2012, Robert Lewandowski came close to joining Manchester United after a phone call from legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
At the time, Lewandowski was rising to prominence as one of Europe’s most promising young strikers, making waves at Borussia Dortmund.
While he eventually spent four years with Dortmund and eight more in the Bundesliga, the Poland international had set his sights on a Premier League move early in his career.

Robert Lewandowski was Close to Joining Manchester United
Speaking on the latest episode of Rio Ferdinand Presents, Lewandowski recounted the pivotal moment that almost led to his move to Old Trafford.
“I remember one conversation with Sir Alex Ferguson,” Lewandowski revealed.
“I had decided to join Manchester United in 2012. Before preseason, I knew Ferguson would call me. During a match, I was subbed off at halftime because I knew the call was coming.”
Robert Lewandowski humorously recalled his nerves during the call, particularly given his limited English at the time.
“He called, and I said, ‘Hello, my name is Robert Lewandowski.’ He replied in his Scottish accent, and I just said, ‘I want to join Manchester United.’”
While Ferguson was eager to bring him to a star-studded squad featuring Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, and Robin van Persie, Dortmund ultimately refused to let go of their prized striker, leaving the deal unrealized.
