1996 Olympic gold medalist Abiodun Obafemi has criticized the lack of dedication displayed by some Super Eagles players following their surprising 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
A Stunning Upset in Uyo
Ranked among Africa’s top teams, Nigeria fell to a Rwandan side sitting 126th in the FIFA rankings in a match played in Uyo on Monday.
Despite already securing AFCON qualification, the defeat was a historic blow as it marked Nigeria’s first loss to Rwanda.
The game saw Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen deploy a weakened squad, allowing Ola Aina and Ademola Lookman to return early to their clubs and benching Victor Osimhen.
This decision, aimed at giving fringe players a chance, backfired as the team failed to meet expectations.

Obafemi Questions Players’ Commitment
In an interview with Brila FM, Obafemi expressed his frustration at the players’ perceived lack of dedication when playing for Nigeria compared to their club performances.
“We expected so much from these guys based on their performances with their clubs, but when they come to Nigeria, they do what they cannot in their teams. It’s a very big concern.
“They must be competitive. I don’t understand why they are selecting games.”
Obafemi’s remarks echo a growing sentiment among fans and analysts who demand greater commitment from the national team.
A Pressing Need for Improvement
The defeat adds to the pressure on Nigeria as they prepare to face Rwanda again in March, this time in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
After starting their qualifying campaign winless in four matches, the Super Eagles must now win all six of their remaining games to secure a spot in the tournament.
Following their failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, the stakes are higher than ever for Nigeria to restore pride and confidence in their national team.
