Frank Lampard has reflected on his short-term return to Chelsea in 2023, as he takes the reins at Coventry City.
The former Blues boss was brought in as interim manager following Graham Potter’s departure, tasked with steering the club through the final seven weeks of a turbulent season.
“When I rejoined Chelsea, I went into a job that was a bit of babysitting from me, in terms of going in to tide them over for seven weeks,” Lampard said during his Coventry unveiling as quoted by 90min.
Despite his efforts, Chelsea secured just one win in 11 games, finishing a disappointing 12th in the Premier League—far removed from their third-place finish under Thomas Tuchel the previous campaign.
A Chaotic Chelsea Environment
Lampard’s second stint coincided with a tumultuous period at Stamford Bridge.
New owner Todd Boehly had signed a wave of young players, creating challenges in team cohesion and management.
The former England midfielder admitted the role was more about maintaining stability than implementing any significant changes.
This wasn’t Lampard’s first challenging managerial stint. His first spell at Chelsea from 2019 to 2021 saw him work through a transfer embargo, relying on academy players to keep the club competitive.
Similarly, his time at Everton included a dramatic battle to avoid relegation in the 2021/22 season.

New Challenges at Coventry
Lampard now faces the task of reviving Coventry City, who are struggling in 17th place in the Championship after losing eight of their first 17 games.
Despite the tough road ahead, he remains determined to succeed.
“I am driven. I like to prove people wrong. I did it in my playing career a lot. As a manager, you know you are going to have to prove someone wrong,” he stated.
