Rodri, Manchester City’s midfield talisman, has expressed his belief that his club should make a move for Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, who has caught the attention of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Barcelona.
The 22-year-old winger, who emerged as a standout performer for Spain during Euro 2024, further solidified his reputation by scoring the opening goal in Spain’s 2-1 victory over England in the tournament final.
This has made him one of Europe’s most sought-after young talents.
Several top clubs explored the possibility of signing Williams during the summer transfer window, but no deal materialized.
Despite interest from Premier League giants like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool, Barcelona also kept close tabs on the Athletic Bilbao star.

Rodri’s Strong Recommendation
Speaking via video link at AS’ awards ceremony in Madrid, Rodri was asked whether he would bring Williams to Manchester City. His enthusiastic response highlighted the winger’s potential:
“Yes, yes. Right now, if I was taking him, I would also be teaching him about the cold in England, although it’s similar to Bilbao. But yes, I would take him with me without a doubt.”
Rodri’s comments underline his confidence in Williams’ ability to thrive in the Premier League and reinforce his belief that the winger could add value to Pep Guardiola’s side.
Financial Hurdles and Release Clause
Williams has a release clause of €58 million (£48.1 million) in his contract with Athletic Bilbao, making him relatively affordable for clubs like City.
However, his €200,000-a-week (£166,000) wage demands were reportedly a sticking point during the summer transfer window.
