According to reports, Dan Ashworth has stepped down from his role as Manchester United’s sporting director just five months after his appointment.

This follows the Red Devils’ 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening, marking their second loss in the space of four days.

The 53-year-old was responsible for “football performance, recruitment, and operations” at United.

However, The Athletic reports via SunSports that Ashworth resigned by mutual consent after a crucial meeting with CEO Omar Berrada following Saturday’s loss at Old Trafford, with the club’s minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, reportedly playing a key role in the decision to part ways.

Ashworth played a major role in United’s £183 million summer spending spree during the first transfer window under Ineos leadership, which included the signings of Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs De Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee, and Noussair Mazraoui.

He also influenced the decision to extend Erik ten Hag’s contract and initially retain him, before the Dutchman was dismissed a few months later due to poor performances.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are currently 13th in the Premier League table, eight points away from a top-four spot. The club is undergoing a rebuilding phase and recently appointed Ruben Amorim as head coach.

With all changes implemented, they will hope these measures prove sufficient to restore United’s former glory.
