Former Montpellier star John Utaka has urged Alex Iwobi to replicate his club-level performances for the Nigerian national team, citing the midfielder’s lack of impact for the Super Eagles as a concern.

Iwobi has been a key figure for Fulham in the Premier League this season, tallying five goals and three assists in just 16 matches—matching his total output from the entire previous campaign.

His standout display came on Thursday, scoring a brace in Fulham’s 3-1 win over Brighton.

However, his form for Nigeria has been far less impressive. The midfielder has failed to score or assist in seven AFCON 2024 matches despite Nigeria reaching the final.

Across his last 34 national team appearances, Iwobi has managed just one goal and two assists.

Utaka, speaking with Brila FM, attributed Iwobi’s inconsistent national team performances to a lack of the same determination and urgency he exhibits at Fulham.

“Alex is a good player; we all know that. But he has to keep the same determination when he comes to the national team because this is the country, not a club side,” Utaka said.

He highlighted the challenges of international football, where players often have limited time to gel and prepare for matches.

“When you come to the national team, you don’t have a year to prepare or play together; you only have about a week. Players have to be even more serious and committed to putting in the work.”

Iwobi’s next challenge is a Premier League clash against Arsenal on Sunday, but Nigerian fans will hope he can translate his impressive Fulham form into success for the Super Eagles, especially with AFCON qualification and other key fixtures on the horizon.
