Fulham star Alex Iwobi, who started in his side’s 1-1 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates, has shared memories of his departure from the Gunners, the club he represented for 15 years.
Having come through Arsenal’s Hale End academy, Iwobi played alongside future stars like Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe.
Across four senior seasons, he made 149 appearances, scoring 15 goals and providing 24 assists.
Despite being a regular under Unai Emery, Iwobi realized his time at Arsenal was nearing its end after the club signed winger Nicolas Pépé in 2019.
Speaking on The Beautiful Game Podcast, Iwobi revealed:
“Arsenal signed a new winger [Pepe], and there were players not ready to leave. They said, ‘We have a high bid for you, and we won’t get this money elsewhere.
It’s a nudge—someone will play in your position. It’s up to you.’”
Faced with the decision, Iwobi chose to join Everton for a fresh challenge. He reflected:
“Everton is a big club that wanted me. I wanted a new challenge, so I thought, why not pursue it?”

Silva’s Heaps Praise on Iwobi
Now at Fulham, Iwobi has rediscovered his form under Marco Silva. Before the recent 3-1 victory over Brighton, Iwobi had six goal contributions this season. He added two more with a stunning brace against the Seagulls.
Silva commended Iwobi’s versatility after deploying him in a different role during the Brighton win:
“We played Alex Iwobi in a different position. He’s an offensive player and did an amazing job this evening. It was a big three points for us in a tough game,” Silva told Amazon Prime.
Iwobi’s consistent performances continue to highlight his value, and Fulham fans will hope for more of the same as the season progresses.
