Lionel Messi, the Argentine World Cup champion and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S. President Joe Biden on Saturday.
However, Messi, who now plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, was notably absent from the ceremony held at the White House.
Historic Recognition for Messi
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the United States, awarded to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to society, including advancing prosperity, peace, or values.
Lionel Messi’s recognition marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the first Argentine and the first male soccer player to receive this prestigious award.
The White House statement highlighted Messi’s unparalleled achievements in football, his philanthropic work through the Leo Messi Foundation, and his role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
These efforts have supported healthcare and education programs for children worldwide.
Scheduling Conflicts and Messi’s Response
According to NDTVsports, Messi’s representatives, through Inter Miami, clarified his absence, citing prior commitments. In a statement, they said:
“The White House informed FIFA, who informed the club at the end of December that Leo was going to be awarded with this recognition. Leo, through the club, sent a letter to the White House saying that he is deeply honored and that it is a profound privilege to receive this recognition but that due to scheduling conflicts and prior commitments he was going to be unable to attend.”
Messi expressed gratitude for the honor and hopes to meet with the U.S. President in the future.
The event featured other high-profile honorees, including U2’s Bono, former basketball star Earvin “Magic” Johnson, and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
