Bayer Leverkusen have announced that Nigerian striker Victor Boniface will miss Friday’s Bundesliga showdown against Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park.

This comes as the forward continues to recover from a thigh injury sustained during Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Rwanda in November 2024.

Injury and Delayed Return

Boniface has been sidelined for seven weeks, missing eight consecutive matches for Leverkusen, including five Bundesliga fixtures.

Hopes for his return were high after he participated in full training before Christmas, but the 24-year-old experienced a minor setback in his rehabilitation.

The club confirmed his absence via an official update, stating:

“Victor Boniface’s return has been delayed due to a minor setback in his recovery process. He continues to work on regaining full fitness.”

Boniface last featured in a competitive game on November 9, during a 1-1 draw against VfL Bochum. Before his injury, he had registered eight goals in 15 appearances across all competitions, showcasing his value as a key attacking option for Leverkusen.

Alternatives in Boniface’s Absence

In Boniface’s absence, Patrik Schick has stepped up impressively, becoming a reliable alternative in the attack.

During the winter transfer window, Leverkusen also strengthened their squad by signing Alejo Sarco from Argentinian champions CA Vélez Sarsfield.

The competition for attacking spots will intensify once Boniface returns to full fitness.

Implications for Dortmund Showdown

The clash with Borussia Dortmund marks a pivotal moment in Leverkusen’s Bundesliga campaign, with both teams battling for supremacy.

However, the absence of Boniface could tilt the balance, placing additional responsibility on Schick and Sarco to lead the attack.
