The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant 32% increase in prize money for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), with the winners set to receive $3.5 million (₦5.4 billion).

This boost provides added motivation for Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles, who are preparing to compete in the tournament, scheduled for February 1–28 in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Team Nigeria preparing ahead of CHAN tournament

Under the leadership of Daniel Ogunmodede (Remo Stars) and Fidelis Ilechukwu (Rangers), the Super Eagles began training on January 6 with a 26-man squad.

The team will look to build on their past successes, which include silver and bronze medals in three previous appearances.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe highlighted the competition’s significance during the prize announcement, stating:

“We have significantly increased the prize money for the winners to $3.5 million, a 75% rise.

The total prize fund for CHAN 2024 has been increased to $10.4 million, enhancing the competition’s appeal to fans, sponsors, and broadcasters globally.”

Motsepe emphasized CHAN’s role in developing Africa-based players, making them more competitive on the global stage.

CHAN draw scheduled for 15th of January 2025

The Super Eagles earned their spot in the tournament by defeating Ghana 3-1 on aggregate in the qualifiers.

They will face fierce competition from teams like Morocco, Senegal, DR Congo, and hosts Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The draw for the tournament will take place on January 15 at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.

With the competition’s expanded prize pool and prestige, Nigeria will aim for their first-ever CHAN title in February.
