Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has ruled out the possibility of playing in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) again, opting instead to focus on scouting and developing emerging talent within the league.
Focus on Development Over Playing
According to allafrica, The former Chelsea defender shared his perspective during a live X (formerly Twitter) Space session co-hosted with Wilfred Ndidi, Asisat Oshoala, and Nigerian journalists.
Omeruo cited the absence of a top-tier club in Abuja, his hometown, as a key factor.
“I grew up in Abuja, and they don’t have a club playing in the top flight. I can’t see myself going back to the Nigerian league to play, but I have a passion for scouting and identifying good players,” he explained.

He emphasized his vision of helping the NPFL become a hub for exporting talent, similar to Brazil. “We should be selling players for significant amounts, not small fees. I want to help make that happen,” Omeruo stated.
Thoughts on Eric Chelle’s Appointment

Omeruo expressed optimism about newly appointed Super Eagles coach Eric Sekou Chelle, describing his arrival as an opportunity for players to prove themselves.

“Everyone has to be serious now—it’s like an open trial. Some of us haven’t been playing regularly, so it’s our chance to show we deserve to be in the team,” he said.
He praised Chelle’s tactical discipline, drawing parallels to his time coaching Mali. “You can see an organized structure in how Mali played, not just in friendlies but at AFCON. With the talent in the Super Eagles, he can implement his style effectively.”
Omeruo also credited former interim coach Austin Eguavoen for rebuilding the team’s confidence during his stint. He expressed belief in the Super Eagles’ potential under proper guidance.
