Super Eagles goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, a 25-year-old naturalized Nigerian, is facing an investigation from the Udine Prosecutor’s Office over unusual betting activity during Lazio’s 2-1 win against Udinese on March 11th.

The report was first revealed by Messaggero Veneto.

The investigation began after Sisal, a betting agency, flagged significant bets placed on Okoye receiving a yellow card in the match.

The goalkeeper was booked in the 64th minute for time-wasting, an action that reportedly caused concern for Udinese coach Gabriele Cioffi.

To prevent further disciplinary action, the coach sent a staff member to speak with Okoye on the field.

Alongside Okoye, a pizzeria owner known to host players and club officials is also under suspicion. Both individuals face allegations of fraud.

If found guilty, the Super Eagles goalkeeper could face severe penalties. Apart from criminal charges, sports justice could ban him from all competitions for at least four years.

Udinese recently signed Norwegian goalkeeper Selvik to provide cover in Okoye’s absence after his wrist surgery.

While initially believed to be a precautionary move, reports suggest the club may have acted in response to Okoye being placed under investigation as early as December.
