Super Falcons’ Coach Justin Madugu, on Monday, addressed the media ahead of Tuesday’s semifinal match against Banyana Banyana.
This fixture comes with extra weight, as the South African side knocked Nigeria out in the 2022 tournament with a 2-1 win. Now, the Falcons are eager to get their revenge and secure a place in the final.
However, the build-up took a dramatic turn on Sunday when Ashleigh Plumptre, one of the team’s most reliable defenders, sat out of training.
That absence raised eyebrows, with many fearing she might miss the all-important clash. Plumptre has been a consistent figure in the team’s backline throughout the tournament and only missed one game so far (against Algeria).
Madugu moved quickly to calm nerves, revealing that Plumptre is fully fit and ready to feature.
“There is absolutely nothing to worry about. We were just being careful with her recovery. She’s available and ready to go,” he said.
Attention then turned to Chioma Okafor, who has been out due to a hand injury. Though she has yet to make her debut in the tournament, her return could offer a surprise option for Madugu if needed.
“She has removed the cast on her hand and got clearance from the hospital. We will assess her and see how we can bring her in if the chance comes,” Madugu explained.
