Super Falcons head coach, Justin Madugu, has exuded confidence ahead of Nigeria’s highly anticipated WAFCON semifinal showdown against reigning champions, South Africa.

The clash, set to be one of the most decisive fixtures of the tournament, comes as the Banyana Banyana look to extend their stunning unbeaten run in regulation time at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, a streak that dates back to 2018.

South Africa, under the leadership of coach Desiree Ellis, are yet to lose a WAFCON game in regular time in their last 14 outings.

But for Madugu and his Nigerian side, that aura of invincibility is not intimidating. Rather, it is a challenge they are ready to confront.

“The preparations are good, the girls have been very committed, determined; they are in good shape; they are well prepared,” Madugu told reporters confidently.

He acknowledged the daunting record held by South Africa but was quick to stress that no streak lasts forever.

“Yes, South Africa have not lost a game within regulation time since 2018. But records are meant to be broken. No matter how long it takes, one day it will be broken. And we are hoping that by tomorrow, by the grace of God, that record will no longer exist,” he declared boldly.

The Super Falcons’ journey to the semifinal has not been without criticism. Nigeria’s group stage performances raised serious concerns among fans and analysts alike.

However, their emphatic 5-0 demolition of Zambia in the quarterfinals sent a strong signal that the nine-time champions remain formidable.

With a tenth WAFCON title within reach, Nigeria’s experienced squad, boasting a blend of youth and veterans, is now focused on dethroning the defending champions and setting up another shot at continental glory.

As the countdown to kickoff begins, Madugu’s optimism has sparked belief among the fans that the Super Falcons have what it takes to rewrite history and end South Africa’s dominant run.
