Nigerian forward Simy Nwankwo, after spending a decade in Italian football, is now on the brink of starting a new chapter in Turkey.

The experienced striker, who once featured for Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup, could soon be wearing the green and black of Sakaryaspor.

Nwankwo, 33, is without a club for the first time in nine years following the end of his contract with Italian side Salernitana. His time in Italy saw him play for several clubs including Crotone, Benevento, and Parma.

It was at Crotone that he enjoyed his best spell, scoring regularly and earning a national team call-up.

Now, the tall centre forward is reportedly in talks with Turkish second division side Sakaryaspor. Turkish journalist Erhan Kaytanbay shared that both parties are negotiating a deal, which is believed to be progressing positively.

Sakaryaspor have been climbing the Turkish football ladder in recent years.

Since gaining promotion to the second tier three seasons ago, they have managed to stay competitive, finishing 5th, 3rd, and 13th in successive campaigns.

Their ambition to reach the top flight appears stronger than ever, and they seem to believe Simy could be the man to lead them there.

If the move goes through, Simy would become the first Nigerian international to play for the club. Though he has not played for the Super Eagles since 2018, his experience and goal-scoring ability could offer Sakaryaspor a valuable edge.

During his World Cup appearance in Russia, Simy played as backup to Odion Ighalo. He earned just four caps for Nigeria and failed to make a lasting impact. However, his consistent performances in Italy still earned him respect, especially after a standout season with Crotone where he bagged over 20 goals in Serie A.
