Nigeria’s WAFCON semifinal hero, “Michelle Alozie”, has opened up about her decision to represent the Super Falcons instead of the United States, despite being born and raised in America.
The 28-year-old Houston-born star, who netted a dramatic 94th-minute winner against South Africa to book Nigeria’s place in the final, says her heart always belonged to the country of her heritage, Nigeria.
I Always Wanted a Nigerian Name on a Nigerian Jersey

Speaking with BBC Pidgin, Alozie revealed that choosing Nigeria was always a dream rooted in family pride and cultural identity.
> “I just knew that I always wanted to have a Nigerian name on a Nigerian jersey,” she said.
Her parents hail from Imo State, and though she grew up in the U.S., the bond with her Nigerian roots was never severed. Alozie described joining the Super Falcons as stepping into a built-in family.
> “It’s an automatic sisterhood,” she said about the team’s camp life. “There’s just so much love and understanding. It feels like home.”
Fans, Culture, and the Power of Purpose
One of the most defining parts of Alozie’s experience with Nigeria has been the fans, passionate, loud, and deep support.
> “They bring us a lot of support and encouragement. It’s amazing to play for them and for something bigger than us,” she added.
This emotional connection has translated into inspired performances on the pitch.
Making History at WAFCON 2024

Alozie’s contributions have been crucial in Nigeria’s 2024 WAFCON campaign. She scored a thunderous late goal against South Africa, securing a 1-0 win that avenged the Super Falcons’ 2022 semifinal exit.
Her chemistry with teammate “Chinwendu Ihezuo” has been deadly in attack, while her defensive work has remained rock-solid.
