Tottenham Hotspur claimed bragging rights in the first-ever North London derby played outside the United Kingdom, defeating Arsenal 1-0 in a pre-season friendly at Kai Tak Stadium.
A sensational 45th-minute chip from Pape Matar Sarr proved the difference, while Arsenal’s new signing Viktor Gyökeres had a quiet debut, managing just two touches after coming off the bench.
Sarr’s Moment of Magic
The match, attended by a record 49,975 fans, was decided by a moment of brilliance from Sarr.
Just before halftime, the Spurs midfielder capitalized on a midfield error by Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly, who appeared to be fouled by Richarlison, though the referee waved play on.
Spotting Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya off his line, Sarr unleashed a perfectly executed lob from just inside Arsenal’s half, sailing over Raya and into the net.
The goal, Tottenham’s only shot on target, sparked controversy, with Arsenal players and fans believing a foul should have been called.
Tottenham had earlier threatened, striking the post three times in the first half twice from corners and once from a Wilson Odobert shot.
Despite Arsenal’s possession dominance, they struggled to create clear chances, with Kai Havertz registering their sole shot on target in the 70th minute.
Gyökeres’ Underwhelming Debut
Much of the pre-match buzz centered on Arsenal’s €73 million signing Viktor Gyökeres, who joined from Sporting CP in a £63.5m deal.
The Swedish striker, introduced as a 77th-minute substitute for Havertz, received a rapturous reception from the Arsenal-heavy crowd.
However, his cameo was limited to just two touches, as Tottenham’s deep-lying defense restricted his involvement.
Despite showing flashes of his physical presence, Gyökeres couldn’t influence the game, leaving Arsenal fans eager for more in upcoming matches.
