Nigeria’s home-based national team, the Super Eagles B, failed to hold on to a two-goal lead as they drew 2-2 with Zanzibar on Thursday.
The game, played as a warm-up ahead of the 2024 CHAN tournament, was meant to boost confidence.
Instead, it raised fresh questions about the team’s focus and ability to manage games.
After a dull 0-0 draw against the same opponents three days earlier, Nigeria started this match with energy and intent.
The coaching team changed five players in the starting line-up, bringing in fresh attackers.
The change worked early on. Anas Yusuf opened the scoring with a neat finish after a fast move. Soon after, Adedayo Olamilekan added a second goal to give Nigeria control.
Second-Half Collapse Raises Concerns
At halftime, Nigeria were leading 2-0 and looked ready for a smooth win. But the second half told a different story. Multiple changes disrupted the team’s shape and flow.
Zanzibar grew stronger and used quick counterattacks to great effect. They scored twice in the second half, leaving Nigeria’s defence exposed and the team frustrated.
Despite the draw, there were some positives. Yusuf and Olamilekan showed sharpness and may have improved their chances of making the final CHAN squad.
The game also gave the team more match fitness and allowed the coaches to try new options.
But with the CHAN opener against Senegal just days away, the late collapse will worry fans. Can the Super Eagles fix their defensive gaps in time?
Nigeria faces Senegal on Tuesday, August 5, at Amaan Stadium.
