The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reportedly dismissed its Director of Refereeing, Désiré Noumandiez Doué, after Morocco formally protested the officiating in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 final.
Morocco Lodges Strong Protest
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) had earlier submitted a formal complaint to CAF, accompanied by video evidence, alleging “critical refereeing errors” that negatively influenced the outcome of the final match. Morocco claimed a clear penalty was denied in their favor, while Nigeria was controversially awarded one.
Nigeria defeated host nation Morocco 3–2 in Rabat to clinch their 10th WAFCON title, sparking debates and heavy criticism surrounding several officiating decisions.
Vilda, FRMF Express Displeasure
Morocco’s coach Jorge Vilda expressed frustration post-match, saying, “There was a penalty that should have stood. The referee blew for it, then VAR overturned it. The handball was clear. That decision shocked us.”
CAF’s decision to remove Doué appears to be a direct response to the backlash, particularly from Morocco and local fans.
The controversial final was officiated by Namibia’s Antsino Twanyanyukwa, with VAR led by Rwanda’s Salima Mukansanga.
