Former Chelsea and England forward Eni Aluko has spoken about why many young players with Nigerian roots choose to play for other countries instead of Nigeria.
According to her, the Nigerian football system needs to improve in many areas if it wants to keep its top talents.
Aluko, who was born in Nigeria but moved to England as a baby, said she never really felt a strong link to Nigeria. She chose to play for England and made her debut at just 17. She went on to make over 100 appearances for the English women’s national team.
Speaking on the Obi One Podcast hosted by Mikel Obi, Aluko said many players make the decision based on their upbringing. “Most of us grow up in England or other countries. We feel more connected to those places,” she said.
Nigeria Must Do More to Compete
She also added that Nigeria must work harder to attract and keep its players. “England is well-organized. Nigeria still has a lot of work to do. If things like investment, professionalism, and support improve, more players will want to represent Nigeria,” she said.
Over the years, Nigeria has missed out on several big names. Bukayo Saka, Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise, and Eberechi Eze all chose European teams despite being eligible for Nigeria.
Still, there are those who chose Nigeria. Players like Ademola Lookman, Calvin Bassey, and Michelle Alozie made the choice to wear the green and white.
Aluko believes it all comes down to making the country a better and more professional option. “If Nigeria improves, more players will stay,” she said.
