Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles began their CHAN 2024 journey with a disappointing 1-0 loss to Senegal.

The game, played at the Amaan Stadium, lacked spark and flow as both sides struggled with fouls and tough tackles.

The only goal came in the second half after a defensive mistake by Leonard Ngenge allowed Senegal’s Christian Gomis to tap in from close range.

Head coach Eric Chelle shared his thoughts after the match. He blamed the defeat on a lack of fight and energy from his players.

According to him, Senegal simply showed more desire to win.

Senegal Wanted It More

Speaking after the match, Chelle admitted his side was second-best in every area.

“Senegal were more aggressive than us. They played with more energy. They deserved to win,” he said.

The coach also pointed to a poor mental start by his players. “We never really got into the game. Maybe we were nervous or scared,” he added.

Chelle stressed that one small mistake led to the only goal and it changed everything. “For 20 minutes, we could not control the game. We lost the ball too easily,” he noted.

Call for Urgent Change

Chelle now wants a new approach from his team. “We need to change our mindset. If we lose every duel, we cannot win. We must fight harder, both in attack and defence.”

He also warned that if they play the same way against Sudan or Congo, they may not stay long in the tournament. “If we don’t improve, we will go home early. We must be brave. We must play without fear,” he warned.

Despite the loss, Chelle believes the team can still turn things around. “It’s just the first match. We have two more games. We still have a chance,” he said.

Must-Win Match Next

Nigeria will now face Sudan on August 12 at the same venue. It is a must-win game if they hope to qualify from Group D.

The coach remains hopeful. “This is a tough tournament with good teams, but we are still in it. Our campaign starts now,” he said.
