Arsenal suffered a 3-2 defeat to Villarreal in a pre-season game at the Emirates Stadium on August 6.
All eyes were on new striker Viktor Gyokeres, who made his debut start after a big-money move from Sporting CP.
Many fans were hoping to see a spark from the £63.5 million signing. Instead, his quiet showing raised more questions than answers.
A Slow Start for the New No 14
Gyokeres arrived in London with high hopes. His record in Portugal was outstanding, scoring 97 goals in just over 100 games.
But on his first start in red and white, things didn’t go as planned. He played 63 minutes, touched the ball only 14 times, and had just two shots.
One was saved, and the other missed the target. He made only four accurate passes and failed to create a chance.
Arsenal’s play was often disjointed, and Gyokeres found himself isolated.
Villarreal’s defense was well-organized and didn’t give him space to work. Wearing the famous No 14 shirt, once worn by Thierry Henry, Gyokeres had a tough act to follow.

Still, there were signs of hope. In the second half, he made a sharp run and hit a strong shot that forced a good save from Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Junior.
It was one of the few moments that hinted at what he could bring in future matches.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said after the game, “He’s been with us for only a few days, but I saw good movement and intent.”
Defensive Gaps Prove Costly
While the spotlight was on Gyokeres, it was Arsenal’s defense that truly let them down. Nicolas Pépé, a former Arsenal player, scored early for Villarreal.
Karl Etta Eyong added another, and Arnaut Danjuma’s goal on the counter-attack made it 3-0. Arsenal looked wide open at the back, and Arteta called the defending “naive.”
Late goals from Christian Norgaard and Martin Ødegaard gave Arsenal a fighting chance.
A 15-year-old academy player, Max Dowman, won the penalty that Ødegaard converted, giving fans something to cheer.
New Faces and Future Promise
Despite the loss, there were positives. Gyokeres showed flashes of strength, winning three out of four ground duels.
Young players like Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri stood out with confidence and energy. New signings Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke also played their first minutes for the club, showing the squad is growing in depth.
As Arsenal prepare for their last pre-season game against Athletic Club, all eyes will remain on Gyokeres.
He may not have made a big impact yet, but the tools are there. Arteta believes it’s only a matter of time before he starts scoring.
