Montpellier HSC have named John Utaka as the new head coach of their women’s team. This move marks a big return for the former Nigerian international, who once brought glory to the club as a player.
Utaka, now 43, was part of the Montpellier men’s team that shocked France by winning the Ligue 1 title in 2012.
He scored twice in the final game of that season, helping the club secure the title. His name still echoes with pride at the Stade de la Mosson.
Since retiring in 2018, Utaka has been quietly building a strong coaching career.
He worked as an assistant coach with the Montpellier U19 side and holds a UEFA A licence, which he earned in 2022.
A Test Already Passed

This is not Utaka’s first time in charge of the women’s team.
He served as interim head coach in 2021 and helped the side finish sixth in the league. That brief spell proved he could lead at the top level.
According to reports, the club is hoping that his second spell will bring consistency and better results. His first task will be to rebuild a team capable of challenging for a playoff spot and even more.
More Than Just a Name

Utaka is not just a former player. He brings wide experience from playing in Nigeria, Egypt, Qatar, France, England, and Turkey. This background gives him a special view of the game.
He is also one of the few African coaches working in top-level European women’s football. His journey is seen as an inspiration by many young African coaches looking to break into the game.
Montpellier’s leadership says they are ready for a new era, and they believe Utaka is the right man to guide the team.
