Peter Oghenekaro Etebo’s return to the Turkish Super Lig has taken a worrying turn after the Nigeria international left the pitch injured during Genclerbirligi’s 2-1 loss to Samsunspor on Saturday.
Etebo, who played a major role in helping Genclerbirligi earn promotion last season, was named captain for their first match of the new campaign at the Samsun 19 Mayis Stadium.
He started strongly, battling in midfield and leading by example as his team struggled to gain control in the opening half.
However, the game took a bad turn when Samsunspor took the lead through a penalty in the 37th minute.
Just minutes later, Etebo went down following a challenge while attempting to win the ball.
He appeared in visible pain and could not continue, forcing an early substitution in the 42nd minute.
Concerns Over Fitness
The club has yet to confirm the exact nature of the injury, but early signs suggest it could be a muscle problem.
With Etebo’s history of injury setbacks, there are fears he may face a spell on the sidelines.
His absence would be a major concern for Genclerbirligi.
As captain and one of the most experienced players in the squad, Etebo brings leadership and stability in midfield.
Losing him so early in the season could make their top-flight survival battle even harder.
Late Fightback Falls Short
After Etebo’s exit, Samsunspor doubled their lead in the second half through Carolo Holse.
Genclerbirligi pulled one back late in the match thanks to Metehan Miraloglu, but it was not enough to salvage a point.
Etebo, 29, has represented Nigeria’s Super Eagles 45 times, though he has not featured for the national team since November 2022 in a defeat to Portugal.
His recent club form had raised hopes of a possible return to international duty, especially for the AFCON, but this latest setback could delay those ambitions.
