Jose Mourinho has reiterated that managing Portugal at a World Cup is his “destiny,” while also admitting he could one day coach England.
The Fenerbahce boss, who has enjoyed stints at Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Roma, is currently focused on club football in Turkey but insists his first international role must be with his homeland.
Mourinho Explains His Vision

Speaking to Sporty Net, the 61-year-old said: “My destiny, in terms of internationals, is to play in a World Cup with the Portuguese national team.
I never considered coaching Brazil. My first experience has to be with Portugal, and then people must understand I am a professional who can coach other teams with which I have strong connections.
England, because it’s my home, Italy, because I worked there for many years, but Portugal has to come first.”
Mourinho, who left Portugal in 2004 after his Champions League triumph with Porto, also noted that his country would never accept him managing another national side before leading his own.
What Lies Ahead

Robert Martinez is the current Portugal head coach and recently delivered a Nations League title. However, speculation continues over whether Mourinho might be lined up for the role ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which begin in September against Armenia and Hungary.
For now, Mourinho’s attention remains with Fenerbahce, who are chasing a place in the 2025-26 Champions League. His side eliminated PSV in the qualifiers and now face Benfica in a crucial play-off tie.
