Nigeria’s Super Eagles are set for a make-or-break moment in their quest to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed that the team’s camp will open on September 1 in Uyo. This comes just five days before a crucial qualifier against Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on September 6.

After the home tie, the Eagles will travel to Bloemfontein where they face South Africa on September 9 at the Free State Stadium.

Both matches are viewed as must-win encounters if Nigeria is to stay in the running for a ticket to North America.

Nigeria Struggling in the Group

Nigeria is currently in fourth place in the qualifying group. The team has collected only seven points from six matches. Their record so far includes one win, three draws, and a painful loss to Benin Republic.

Group leaders South Africa are on 13 points. Rwanda and Benin follow with eight points each, while Lesotho has six and Zimbabwe four.

Only the first-placed team will qualify directly for the World Cup which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

With four games still left to play, the Eagles must now push for victories in every match while also hoping their rivals slip. Anything less could mean missing another World Cup.

Pressure on Coach Chelle

Head coach Eric Chelle has yet to name his squad for the September fixtures, but the list is expected soon.

For now, the coach is completing duties at the African Nations Championship in Tanzania. The home-based Eagles had a poor run there, losing to Senegal and Sudan before facing Congo in their final match.

Chelle will return immediately after that campaign to focus on the World Cup qualifiers.

The pressure is heavy on his shoulders, as fans still remember the disappointment of 2022 when Nigeria failed to qualify for Qatar after a playoff loss to Ghana.

Big names such as Victor Boniface, Moses Simon, and Frank Onyeka are expected to be called up to strengthen the squad. The Super Eagles cannot afford another slip, especially at home against Rwanda.
