Former Nigeria striker Brown Ideye has announced his retirement from professional football after almost 20 years on the pitch.
The 36 year old forward confirmed his decision in an emotional message on X (formerly Twitter), bringing to an end a career that spanned Europe, Asia and Africa.
Ideye, a member of the Nigerian team that lifted the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, said he had given the game his all.
He thanked God, his family, his teammates, his coaches and millions of fans who supported him through the highs and lows of his career.
“Football has given me everything. I am grateful for the chance to play and to represent my country. Though I stop playing now, football will always remain a part of my life,” Ideye wrote.

Highlights With the Super Eagles
The forward played 28 times for Nigeria between 2010 and 2016, scoring six goals.
His most celebrated moment came at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa, where he was part of the team led by late coach Stephen Keshi that delivered Nigeria’s third continental crown.
He also represented the Super Eagles at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil and was part of the squad at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Club Career Across Continents
Ideye began his journey with Bayelsa United and Ocean Boys in Nigeria before moving abroad.
He shone in France with Sochaux and later found success in Ukraine with Dynamo Kyiv, where his goals earned him a move to the Premier League.
At West Bromwich Albion, he scored four league goals between 2014 and 2015. He later played for Olympiacos in Greece, Málaga in Spain, Tianjin Teda in China and Aris Thessaloniki in Greece.
He eventually returned to Nigeria, turning out briefly for Enyimba in the local league. His final match came in May 2025 in a clash between Enyimba and Plateau United.
Even though Ideye is stepping away from active play, he has already started shaping the next stage of his career. He has taken up a role with Atlantic Business FC in Nigeria’s TCC League, where he focuses on developing young talents.
