The Super Eagles ended their CHAN group stage run with a 2-0 win against Congo’s Red Devils in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday evening.
While the victory meant little in terms of tournament progress, it produced talking points that caught the attention of fans.
One of the most exciting moments came when 15 year old Ebenezer Harcourt was handed his senior debut. The youngster started in goal, replacing Lawal Mustapha of Shooting Stars.
His presence gave fans hope for the future, even though Nigeria had already been knocked out of the competition.
Coach Eric Chelle also introduced new faces across the pitch. Stephen Manyo partnered Nduka Junior in defense while Alex Oyowah added fresh legs to the midfield.
Up front, NPFL’s top scorer Anas Yusuf started alongside Sikiru Alimi.
Drama and Injuries
The match was not short of drama. Congo striker Elie Andzouono went down with a head injury after clashing with Manyo inside the Nigerian box. The 23 year old required urgent treatment but could not continue. He was replaced before halftime by Wilfried Nkaya.
Manyo himself was lucky to remain on the field. His sliding tackle caught Congolese defender Prince Mapata on the ankle, sparking calls for a red card.
After a VAR check, the referee showed only a yellow card. Fans of Congo were not pleased but Nigeria breathed a sigh of relief.
Yusuf Silences Doubters
One of the loudest debates before the game was about Anas Yusuf’s absence in earlier matches.
Despite scoring 18 goals for Nasarawa United, the striker had been overlooked in favor of Sikiru Alimi, who managed just five league goals. The decision sparked heavy criticism of Coach Chelle.
Against Congo, Yusuf finally got his chance and wasted no time proving his worth. He opened the scoring in the second half after a smooth team move, reminding everyone why he is considered one of the most dangerous strikers in the NPFL.
Alimi Steps Up at Last
While Yusuf grabbed the headlines, Alimi also had his moment.
The Remo Stars forward had been under fire for weak displays against Senegal and Sudan.
But this time he responded. Alimi scored Nigeria’s second goal and also registered an assist, sealing the win and silencing critics.
