Bayer Leverkusen winger Nathan Tella says he is ready to fight for a place in Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The 26 year old admitted he was disappointed after missing the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast, where Nigeria lost in the final to the hosts.
Eyeing Redemption After Missing 2023 Tournament
Speaking to Olympics, Tella said the experience of watching his teammates play on such a big stage gave him extra drive.
“I saw how well the boys did and it made me proud. But it also gave me more hunger to be there next time,” he said.
He stressed that playing for Nigeria is a huge honour and must be earned.
“You are not just handed the shirt. You have to show quality at your club and work hard to keep that place. There is no better feeling than wearing that green and white shirt,” he added.

New Season, New Challenge Under Ten Hag
Tella enjoyed an excellent season with Leverkusen last year and now aims to reach even greater heights under new manager Erik ten Hag. The Bundesliga season kicks off soon and Tella hopes to maintain strong form to catch the eye of coach Eric Chelle.
The winger knows that a strong club season will boost his national team chances. “To play for Nigeria, I need to take my game to the next level. I want to keep improving and show why I belong in the squad,” he stated.
The Super Eagles came close to glory in Ivory Coast but narrowly missed out. With the 2025 edition approaching, competition for places is fierce. Tella believes his energy, pace and drive can add value to the squad.
