Brown Ideye, a former Nigerian international and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner, has urged current football stars to start preparing for life after the game.
He gave this advice to Super Eagles’ players including the likes of Osimhen, Lookman, Iwobi, Bassey, Ekong, and Boniface, who are currently shining in top European leagues.
Ideye, who played for clubs such as West Bromwich Albion, Olympiacos, and Dynamo Kyiv, said many retired footballers face financial problems because they fail to plan early.
“Save From Day One,” Ideye Advises
In a message shared on social media, Ideye encouraged players to save money no matter how much they earn. He explained that building a financial safety net should start from the first professional contract.
“Footballers should save for the future from the start. Even if the pay is small, set something aside for later years,” Ideye advised.
He also stressed the need for players to surround themselves with trustworthy people.
According to him, having the right people and a supportive partner is just as important as financial planning.
“Pray for God to bring good people around you. Choose a partner who will stand by you after your career is over,” he added.

Rising Concerns Over Retired Players
Ideye’s warning comes after Taribo West made headlines about how former Nigerian footballers are treated after retirement.
The 51-year-old lamented the poor treatment of sports heroes in Nigeria, pointing fingers at the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, and the government.
West’s comments came at the burial of the late Nigeria goalkeeper, Peter Rufai.
The incident has sparked calls for better welfare and support systems for players once they hang up their boots.
Osimhen, Lookman, Boniface, and other young stars are currently enjoying fame and success across Europe. However, Ideye believes that without proper planning, a bright career can lead to a difficult retirement.
