Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface will resume treatment at Bayer Leverkusen after his transfer to AC Milan collapsed.
The 24-year-old had already reached personal terms with the Italian giants, and both clubs had agreed on a loan move with a purchase option.
However, the deal broke down following medical tests in Italy.
Previous Transfer Attempts Also Failed
This is not the first time Boniface has faced transfer disappointment this year.
Earlier in 2025, he was close to joining Cristiano Ronaldo’s club Al Nassr. The Nigerian forward reportedly passed a medical in Saudi Arabia but was not signed in the end.
Instead, Al Nassr opted to bring in Jhon Duran from Aston Villa for a huge transfer fee of 77 million euros.
Ironically, Duran has since moved on to join Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce.
Boniface then returned to Leverkusen where he was warmly welcomed by former coach Xabi Alonso, who praised his effort and attitude.
Physical Therapy and Future Prospects
Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes confirmed that Boniface will undergo special therapy to restore full knee fitness.
Speaking to German outlet BILD, Rolfes said, “If Boniface comes back to Leverkusen, the AC Milan deal will be over. That’s no big secret,” the 43-year-old said in quotes revealed by BILD.
“Renegotiating the deal? I don’t think that will happen. His [Boniface] physical situation has improved compared to the beginning”.
“Boni has now behaved sensibly. This is by no means a problem, but he has to go into physical recovery now so that he is at 100 percent.”
The director added that the striker’s condition has improved since earlier in the season but emphasized that careful rehabilitation remains key. Boniface will now work closely with Leverkusen’s medical team to regain top form.
What Lies Ahead for Boniface?
With the Milan deal cancelled, questions arise about the player’s future.
Reports suggest new Leverkusen coach Erik Ten Hag may not include him in long-term plans. This means the forward might consider another move once his recovery is complete.
Boniface has already endured two cancelled transfers this year and is eager to secure a fresh start.
Whether that will be in Germany or elsewhere remains uncertain. For now, his focus is on healing, training and returning to the pitch stronger than ever.
