Nigeria’s hopes for a strong start in September’s FIFA World Cup qualifying matches have taken a big hit as two key players face injuries.
Striker Akor Adams and first choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali are both set for time on the sidelines, leaving coach Eric Chelle with major concerns.
Adams suffered a muscle injury while training with Sevilla and has been ruled out for several weeks.
Medical tests confirmed a damaged thigh muscle that will keep him out of his club’s upcoming game against Girona and the national team’s crucial qualifiers.

This setback comes just as Adams earned his first call up to the Super Eagles.
The 25 year old forward had been eager to make his debut in the matches against Rwanda and South Africa but must now focus on recovery.
Goalkeeping Worries Grow

Adding to the problem is the injury to Stanley Nwabali. The dependable goalkeeper was taken off in the first half of Chippa United’s win over Richards Bay in South Africa’s top league.
His exit after 35 minutes has sparked fears he may not regain fitness in time for national duty.
Nwabali became a household name after his strong performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations where Nigeria reached the final. His cool play and quick reactions have made him the top choice for the number one spot.
Losing him now would force the team to rely on less tested goalkeepers like Amas Obasogie, Adebayo Adeleye, or teenager Ebenezer Harcourt.
Must Win Games Ahead
Nigeria’s qualification journey has been shaky. The Super Eagles sit fourth in Group C with seven points from six matches and trail leaders South Africa by six points.
To keep their dream of reaching the 2026 finals alive, they must win their home match against Rwanda on 3 September and deliver a strong display away in Bloemfontein.
For Adams, the injury extends a troubling run since joining Sevilla where he has already battled fitness issues.
Though he has yet to score, he did provide an assist in the club’s opening La Liga game.
Coach Chelle will now depend on Victor Osimhen, Tolu Arokodare, and Terem Moffi to provide attacking firepower in Adams’ absence.
But with their goalkeeper spot also uncertain, Nigeria faces a tough challenge in the weeks ahead.
