Inside the Nigeria Premier Football League: Challenges and Hope
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is the highest tier of the Nigerian football league system. While the league enjoys passionate fan support, it also faces challenges that the chairman, Gbenga Elegbeleye, is actively working to address.

Poor Officiating Cited as Major Challenge
One of the biggest hurdles for the NPFL, according to Elegbeleye, is the quality of officiating. He acknowledges that there are talented referees within the league, but there are also instances of questionable calls that mar the game.
“It’s heartbreaking and mind-blowing when you see some officiating, and you wonder how come?” Elegbeleye said in a recent interview. “Some are so glaring for all to see that even a non-referee couldn’t have made such a questionable call.”
The league is taking steps to address this problem. Elegbeleye assures fans that efforts are underway to “purge poor officials from the league” and raise the overall standard of officiating.
Behind the Scenes: The Ball Boys of the Nigerian Premier League
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is a vibrant league filled with passionate fans and talented players. But there’s another group that contributes to the game day experience – the ball boys.

One such ball boy is Kamaldeen, who joined the crew at the Kwara State Sports Stadium in 2023. His words offer a glimpse into the world of these young pitchside helpers: “We get paid N300 per match.“
NPFL Strives for Improvement
The ranking of the NPFL on the continent is another area where improvement is desired. Based on the Confederation of African Football’s five-year ranking and the performance of Nigerian clubs in continental competitions over the past five years (no Nigerian club has reached a continental final in that timeframe), the NPFL falls outside the top ten in Africa.

Despite these challenges, Elegbeleye emphasizes the progress that has been made. “We are certainly not there yet, but everyone can attest that the league has made some improvements and it’s better than we met it,” he said.
Current Standings in the NPFL
With 32 games played in the ongoing season, Enugu Rangers lead the league table with 57 points. Following closely behind are Remo Stars (56 points) and Enyimba (53 points). Shooting Stars sit in fourth place with 52 points, just ahead of Lobi Stars on goal difference. The tight race at the top of the table highlights the competitiveness of the NPFL.
