Cristiano Ronaldo has pledged his full support and respect for Portugal manager Roberto Martinez’s decisions at Euro 2024, even if it means starting on the bench. As he aims to lead his nation to glory once more, just like in Euro 2016, Portugal is seen as one of the tournament favorites.

Despite being past his prime, Ronaldo remains a key figure for his country, having scored 10 goals in the qualifiers—only Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku scored more. However, there is ongoing debate about whether he can maintain this form in the finals. Some suggest Martinez should consider starting younger talents like Diogo Jota or Goncalo Ramos instead.

Cristiano Ronaldo believes he is ready anytime he is called upon

Reflecting on his experience at the 2022 World Cup, where he scored just once in five games and was benched by then-coach Fernando Santos, Ronaldo has emphasized his commitment to professionalism. The 39-year-old forward insists he will be “100 per cent professional” and ready to support the team regardless of his role.

“The most important thing is that I am well physically and psychologically,” Ronaldo stated. “I am prepared, I always prepare in the best way. I will be ready as always to help our country and respect the coach’s decisions.”

Cristiano Ronaldo remains the all-time top scorer in the Euros with 14 goals, and Euro 2024 will mark his sixth and likely final appearance at the championships. Acknowledging his career’s twilight, the Al-Nassr forward cherishes every opportunity to play and contribute to the national team.

A Passionate Pursuit of Glory

Ronaldo anticipates Euro triumph

Ronaldo’s passion for representing Portugal remains undiminished. “The thought has to be that [winning the Euros], be positive, take it step by step. Dreaming is free and this team has the talent to dream. Nothing can be achieved without work, we have to work and fight,” he said.

Reflecting on his journey, he added, “I know I don’t have many years of football left. It’s a gift to play year after year, after 35. I’m 39 and every year is about enjoying [myself]. To score for the national team is special. The national team is the love of my life, winning the Euros would be a dream.”

Ronaldo also shared his enduring passion for the game: “For me, playing for the national team is a passion, a love. Any game is special, a European Championship is special, it will be my sixth, which is also a record. Playing in 2004, when I made my debut, or playing today, the feeling is always of pride and passion. It doesn’t get any better than this.”

Portugal has been drawn in Group F and will kick off their tournament against the Czech Republic on Tuesday, June 18, before facing Turkey and Georgia.
