Victor Osimhen marked his return to the pitch in style, scoring a great goal for Nigeria in the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifier match against Benin, where Nigeria bounced back with a 3-0 victory.

After being sidelined since the end of the 2023-2024 season, his return was much anticipated, especially after his recent transfer to Galatasaray.

In particular, Osimhen noted that this goal was made during the training sessions in preparation for the match.

Speaking on the Counter Attack podcast, Osimhen explained that he communicated with teammate Semi Ajayi in Yoruba, telling him “File file,” meaning let go of the ball, which led to the perfect shot.

Osimhen spoke enthusiastically when he said that he was happy that Nigeria is back to winning ways after a string of three games without victory.

He emphasised the team’s desire and willingness to take revenge for the previous matches in which Benin defeated them.

“In this game, everyone can see in our eyes, the way we played, that we were really hungry for the win.

“We were searching for the win to make sure we get the win. The last time we met our opponents, they defeated us, so it was also like revenge, and I’m happy we gave our all and got the three points.”

This victory made a clear statement for Nigeria and more so marked their intentions of ruling the AFCON qualifying phase.
